WHAT IS COACHING?
The Results definition of coaching is:
“Facilitating positive change by improving thinking”
The role of a coach is to help people think better, NOT to tell them what to do. The coach is there to facilitate a conversation, to allow a conversation to unfold that is appropriate for the client. A coach is to provide long lasting change, not just a quick fix that dissipates over time.
The five principles of Results Coaching
Self directed learning
Solutions focused
Stretch
Positive Feedback
Structure
Self directed learning
Results Coaching is a process that helps people answer their own questions The coach is there to support the other persons learning journey through a structured questioning approach, rather than by directing or advising. Our brains are dramatically different and what we think another should do is often what we would do and may not be the right idea for them or help with their way of thinking. If we want to improve the quality of others thinking, our best option is to help them process ideas better. Things like helping to clarify their ideas and prioritizing their thoughts.
Solutions Focused
Coaching is about looking for a solution and not focusing on the past. It’s setting your sights on where you want to be verses where you’ve come from. Focusing on solutions opens up our minds to new ideas and possibilities. Spending too much time in the past is draining and takes away energy to move to a new way of thinking. This doesn’t mean we don’t address problems, it just means we look immediately on solutions for the way forward.
Stretch
People work at their best when their stretched. Stretch is about getting coaches to think about actions and ideas that open them up to different ways of thinking about things. Understanding that all brains are different, the coach needs to stretch people differently and at different times. Its about the quality not the quantity of stretch that is provided that makes the difference.
Positive feedback
Coaching is about providing positive reinforcement helping the coachee to develop the new habits. The coach needs to be specific and generous with acknowledgments, encouraging the coachee to stay focused on what they want. People themselves are their own biggest critics, so criticizing what was wrong will only develop any defensive habits further. We stay focused on what’s done well and support those new habits.
Structure
The Results coaching model is highly structured for maximum results. Formal coaching is delivered within a set framework, over a set time with specific and clear goals or outcomes. The more structure we provide, the more energy the coachee can spend on high level thinking.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY COACHING IS WORKING ?
All individual and team coaching assignments must have a clear measurable result. This will be determined before any coaching will begin. During the coaching engagement there will be regular checks against the desired outcomes and any necessary adjustments will be made along the way.
